With InDesign CS5 you get a lovely new tool, the Gap tool. Basically it allows you to manipulate the gaps between boxes, thereby changing the size of the boxes themselves.
For example, if you layout eight rectangles and, using InDesign’s gap tool, you can change the position of the gaps between each set of frames, whilst the frames resize.

I had an irritating problem with InDesign CS5 this week. It seems after uninstalling the CS4 version of InDesign, Windows 7 no longer recognised the default program for the .INDD file type. I presumed this was because when I installed the CS5 version the installer left the default version set to CS4 still and then removing CS4 confused it (a glitch in the CS5 installer). Read more...

For ages when I train InDesign, I always get the question – once you have created a star or polygon within InDesign, can you change the number of sides/points afterwards. Each time I would tell the trainee – no.
I have never seen any documentation, notes, tips, etc that tell me this was possible.
However, I was playing around InDesign a couple of days ago, creating polygons, and I suddenly thought – what if i draw the shape, double-click on the polygon tool and change the number of sides, whilst my shape is still selected? Read more...
Masters within InDesign are very useful – they provide a common background for whichever page(s) you are working with. But here are some not so well known/used tips regarding masters and pages.
1] A master can also have a master
Say you want a master for Chapter 1 – usually a header and footer. But the footer may be fairly general, just Page X say. This would be the same for Chapter 2, 3 etc.
If you setup a master with just that footer, the next time you create a master (Pages panel > options in the top right-hand corner > New master) notice that you have the option of basing the new master on one already created. Read more...
